Norbert Ivanyi was born in 1953, in Budapest, Hungary. He graduated from the High School of Fine Arts in 1972, and then went on to complete his Masters at the Academy of Fine Art in 1978.
While still a student, he joined the Vajda Lajos Studio of Szentendre, a group dedicated to radical experimentation.
Ivanyi held his first major exhibition in the Toldi Mozi (1978) and later in the Young Artists' Club (1981). The latter was a multimedia event featuring painting and graphic works interspersed with television monitors.
Later he worked with the director, Zoltan Huszarik on his film "Csontvary" (1980-81), illustrated Hemingway short stories, Rainer Maria Rilke's prose, works of Cortazar, Tolstoy, and Bradbury. He went on to illustrate science fiction, design magazine covers, album covers and did animation for both television and cinema.
In the meantime, he had effectively shaped his own art, absorbing Max Earnst's surrealist imagery, pop art and photo-realism. During this period, two older associates in the Vajda Lajos Studio, George Kemeny and Tibor Helenyi, were especially helpful.
